DIGESTION. Herbs are particularly good at rebalancing and restoring good digestion. There is a long history of using bitters in Europe to stimulate digestion, carminatives are used everywhere in the world to help reduce bloating and gas, other herbs tend to support a healthy mucosal lining in the gut, and still others help to restore balance where there are issues of constipation or diarrhea. Herbs work at their best when they are in contact with the tissue and getting herbs into your gut is a pleasure- drink herbal tea!

RESPIRATORY. There are many ways in which herbs can help us support our lungs, ears, nose and throat and it is always useful to have some herbal remedies at hand when cold and flu season arrive. Some of the herbs we use in the winter season are immune supportive, such as elderberry, others are more topically supportive. Topical for the respiratory system is using steams. One of my favorite remedies when exposed to a virus is a steam of thyme and peppermint.

STRESS. Some of the most used herbs are ones that help support your nervous system. These includes the herbs called “nervines” and some herbs that actually have a slight sedative effect, as well as the herbs that are called “adaptogens.” Adaptogens are herbs that work to restore balance and equanimity and can help with fatigue.

These are only a few of the ways in which herbs can help address imbalances. For more information about ways in which herbs can help you, contact your herbalist here.
